The new year is upon us...

Well the holidays have hit with flash. I swear I think school just started and now we're almost at the half-way mark!  It's been quiet on the home front, but don't let that mislead you....our guild members have been actively sewing and finishing projects for the holidays.  Fingers crossed for all of our members who entered quilts into Quilt Con!  Way to represent!  This month I plan not to take much of your time.  Remember to cherish the close time with friends and family.  What's that saying...."Time flies while you're busy making other plans!"  Well take time to enjoy the time you have together.
Happy Holidays!

Things to remember:
1)  Remember we have our Annual Holiday Party at Rosarios (see the side note for details).
2)  Sara is hosting a cooking exchange, so don't forget to confirm if you can make it.  I hear their are delicious in store for you.
3)  One last chance to get your Thirty One bag.  The representative will be at Sara's.  This also supports retreat for those of you attending.

We'll see you Thursday or after the New Year.  Be safe and have tons of fun.....sewing of course!

Hello fellow sewistas!  I can't believe it's October....Well the holidays are coming, and can you feel the tension rising?  What is it about the holidays?  One moment you're excited thinking of all the get togethers and feasts (you can hardly contain yourself), and then you over commit, over indulge and wish you could have a do-over.  Well it's important not to forget yourself.  Make smart decisions and maintain your sanity.  That may mean not over committing so you have an opportunity to be creative and hone your sewing skills. If you're anything like me, I go through withdrawals when I don't have an opportunity to sew.  Yes, I said it, "I am addicted to quilting!"  Oh wait, wrong forum, or is it?

We've been together for a while now and we are starting to see various works from everyone. It's so exciting, isn't it?  With that being said, please take some time for yourself and discover the creative process this season and always.  Try not to stress out about the end product focus on the build, or if the end is your "process" then try not to worry so much about the "build" but rather the end product.  If you're willing, tell us about your journey.

For SA Mod Guild Members only.....
Allison Rosen, C&T Books (STASH is our imprint) platinum level sponsor of QuiltCon, wrote us to ask for assistance!!

This is their first consumer show.  They are used to quilt market where they sell wholesale, and they are filled with great ideas about how will create a shop at QuiltCon among the vendor booths.

They are looking we for our membership to volunteer to help them man the booth at Quilt Con.  They need help providing product information where needed, writing up orders, and helping with set up and break down of the booth.

They are offering a show floor ticket for free to anyone who is willing to help them out!

As for dates and times - that remains to be determined once they know what kind of response we are getting.  If you are interested, please let me know via private message or at the meeting.

***The October meeting  been pushed back a week due to quilt retreat. It will be Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Northside Church of Christ.  Remember Happy Hour is at 6pm, so please come early if you can!  Please don't forget to bring your Halloween BOM! We can't wait to see your creativity.  Thank you Allison (for kitting everything so nicely)!
***Heather Grant, Austin MQG board member, will be talking to us about Modern Quilting and the Modern Quilting Movement.  She is a member of the Austin MQG and also on the board of The Modern Quilt Guild.

Autumn has arrived, or has it?

In our board installation last month our theme for the 2012-2013 was revealed, "Community." Well as luck would have it, Amanda and Rebecca of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild have invited us to be a part of a on-line community they created called Threadbias http://www.threadbias.com. The idea came from a "pair of quilter-sewists, to bring people together for fabric and fun."  They are excited to build a sewing community and exchange ideas, projects, sew alongs, bees inspiration and more! Threadbias was created more than a year ago and is growing more and more each day. It's super easy to sign up and not to mention it's absolutely FREE! In looking to really spread our wings this year, I encourage you to log on and get involved.

In the spirit of National Sewing Month, we have initiated a challenge. See the newsletter for details or click the challenge tab above.

August is heating up....

And things are happening...
So the summer has flown by.  I am not sure about you guys, but it feels like summer just started and now it's on the verge of ending. I can't say I've been as productive as I'd hoped, but in reading FaceBook and seeing photos from the meetings, you guys are Rockin'!  Way to crank out the good stuff.  Congratulations  are due all around to Leslie and Danielle for their outstanding accomplishments this weekend!  Leslie had a traveling exhibit called "Rituals" which was at the Long Beach International Quilt Festival, and her quilt will continue on to Houston this fall.  The accolades keep rolling with  Danielle placing 2nd in the Wall Category in the New Braunfels Show this weekend.  Way to go ladies! Whoohooh!

Well we have tons going on this month to include a few events.  This Thursday, August 2nd is our installation tea.  Thanks to Debbie T., and the countless members helping with all of the arrangements, our new board members will be welcomed with open arms, while the exiting board will be missed.  Speaking of missed, Anna V, has moved and joined the Houston Modern Quilt Guild.  We will miss her, but she promises to keep in touch and visit often!  Good luck Anna!
"Piece Out" - Event
Paper piecing workshop at Maverick Library (8700 Mystic Park) on August 12th from 1:30-4:30pm.  Barbara Craig will present a paper piecing workshop.  Please reserve your slot ahead of time, by calling Eileen.  There is a $30 fee for the kit.

July Happenings....

  • Our meeting is taking place, as usual, on the first Thursday of the month, so don't forget your sew and tell.  Our program this month will be Paper Piecing, and Barbara Craig is giving a demonstration at the meeting. You don't need to bring anything.  Mark you calendars because there will be a follow up to the demonstration. A workshop will be held August 18th at the Maverick Library from 10a-2p.
  • Don't forget to bring your BOM to the meeting. Remember July was quilter's choice, it only had to be 10.5" square.  Also, it needs to be red, white and/or black.
  • Quilt Con registration opens up August 1st, so if you plan to attend make sure you do this.  There is still no word on the cost for the event, so don't spend too much money on fabric during all of those Independence Day sales! :)
  • Debbie T. is our POC for the New Board Installation Tea.  It will  be before the guild meeting in August, so make plans to attend, because we'd love to see all of you there.  Please check with Debbie if you would like to bring some cookies or other needed supplies.
Happy Sewing!

June news....

If you missed the meeting last week, we had a few new people join us, and we look forward to seeing Rachel and Crystal again! Don't forget the agenda/meeting minutes are posted on FB.

Several things are happening this month, so make time to join us for a few of them:

  • Scrappy Bee is this Friday, June 15th @ Sara E's.  See our event on FB if you want to join in the fun.
  • Binding and hanging sleeve workshop at the Maverick Library on the June 23rd.  See our FB page for times and supply lists.
  • BOM - quilter's choice!  Anna has several posted here, so check it out or do one of your own.  The only requirement is it needs to be 10.5"
It looks like our July meeting takes place the day after 4th of July, so stay tuned to see if plans change, but for now, the meeting is on!

Debbie T has a sign up sheet floating around for a tea taking place during the August installation of the new board, so if you're interested, please connect with her on FB.

Eileen posted a bus resource for the Houston Quilt Festival if you're interested on FB, so check it out.

Sarah J is heading up a challenge for the guild.  She's asked that you message her if you interested to take the challenge and pony up some dough.  I mean that in multiple senses of the word!

Alright people, June is almost halfway gone!  Boy time flies....until next time....
