November 2013 Meeting

((Click the image to enlarge))

Thank so much to member and long armer, Danielle Wilkes who gave a presentation on how to prepare your quilt to send to your long arm quilter.  Read more on Danielle Wilkes on her blog, Nacho Mama Quilt.

Danielle had a hands-on demo on the stretch of warp and weft grain lines and explained the importance of measuring your quilts before stitching on any borders.  Turns out, pins are your friends.

If there's a bubble or irregularity in your pieced top, Danielle covered how the quilting can really make the quilt.  Not just design aesthetic-wise, but the quilting can save your piecing bacon!  Choose an open loose design to quilt a project that may have irregularities.  Choose a closed design, such as a circle or other closed shape for designs that were pieced with more accuracy.

Danielle also has decided she is bringing back the Quilted Vest look.  As if it ever went out.  =)

Thanks again for sharing your wisdom with our group.

October 2013 Meeting Presentation Schlosser Designs

Schlosser Designs

Erin Schlosser of Schlosser Designs gave a great presentation on using our quilt skills to apply them to non-quilt sewing concepts. She showed us her design process and tools. She talked about working with fabric companies and designers, events for Janome and we *might* have got a super sneak peek at a line of fabric releasing in Houston. All of her patterns were for sale and if you missed the presentation, check out her patterns and website here: http://www.schlosserdesigns.com/

The laminated graph paper and tracing paper makes her design process smooth and variable as she can add design details easily to test which styles/shapes she wants in her next amazing project.

Erin had plenty of pattern samples and was able to share with us that her patterns are written from a Sewing Instructor's point-of-view.  She adds tips and designer notes to every pattern.  On her newer patterns, she even includes QR codes which link to websites that have full photographs of the step-by-step construction.  Visit her pattern shop HERE.

Erin's designs go much further past her own pattern collection.  She designs for patterns for Windham Fabrics.  The pattern above is a free download on their website.  Look for big things coming soon from Schlosser Designs, including a chapter or two in an upcoming book.

Pet Postcards

Pet Postcards!

The first outreach challenge has been issued.  PET POSTCARDS.

The whole Pet Postcard Fundraising Project is the charge of Pokey Bolton, the director at the Houston Quilt Show.  One her blog, Pokey's Ponderings, she launched the challenge first, last year.  That's right it is an annual fundraising event.  Last year, she put out a call for postcards, hoping to raise a couple thousand dollars.  The Pet Postcard project raised $20,000, last year.

Wowsa.

The money raised is donated to Friends for Life, the fastest growing no-kill shelter, in Houston Texas.
Each postcard is put on display and sold at the Houston Quilt Festival in October.  The cards are sold for $20 a piece.

At the September Meeting, members brought in "what they had so far".  The postcards are due at the October meeting (October 3rd), but our Outreach Chair can take cards after the meeting, though you'll need to email her to arrange a drop-off.

So far, we have 37.  Seriously.  Our "so far" number is 37!  That would be $740, of all those post cards to sell.  SAMQG is so honored to be able to give to such a wonderful cause.  Keep up the good work!

Love is in the air my dears.....Quilt Con is finally here!

We have some pretty exciting things going on this month in case you fallen off of the radar or Facebook isn't one of your appendages.   During our meeting this month, you could have a chance to win a ticket to Quilt Con!  What up....whoop whoop!  Okay, so maybe I'm a little over zealous, but it's a great opportunity.  Don't forget, we have some members whose quilts are on display, so check them out when you're there, and take lots of pictures (to post on the blog).  Now thanks to Erin and Allison, you could be attending Quilt Con sporting your very own
Hot Tamale gear!  I heard there are glitter options, which could be rock'in for the 80's throw back party!  So load up on gear, and sport it any way you can during any outings on your schedule!  Oh and don't forget to blab about it to all of your friends!

Thank you to everyone who worked to make our Guild entries to Quilt Con a success.  You are all very amazing women!

and

Also for those of you looking for something really WICKED to do... we have  a 2013 Challenge!  So get your creative juices flowing and start brainstorming your entry.  This guild never ceases to amaze me with your talents.

QuiltCon and Our Members!

Our very own Hot Tamales are ringing in the 2013 New Year with bells galore....
For those of you not glued to Facebook....we have some news!
Allison Chambers, Jen Eskridge, Leslie Tucker Jenison, and Sarah Jimenez will all have their quilt works up for display at Quilt Con!  Whoohooh!  Ladies, way to represent San Antonio and your fellow quilters.  Those of us going can't wait to see your creations!  Congratulations on making it to the big league!  (Feel free to browse a few of their blogs annotated on the right)

Well I hope all of you are having a wonderfully blessed holiday season and sharing it with those you love.  As you know, many people will be asking you what your New Year's resolution will be.  Where does 2013 find you?  Where will this year take you?

There are certainly no shortages of Hot Tamale happenings, so get your calendars ready ladies....

*Sue P. will be collecting the next payment for retreat goers at this Thursday's meeting, so have your check books handy.  If you're not sure about your balance, please give her a call or message her on Facebook.

**Kelly P has scheduled a charity sew in at the Northside Church of Christ on Saturday, January 12, 13 from 10a-3p.  We will be working to complete a charity top for QuiltCon from the squares they sent us. It's due in Austin by February 1st!  We will also be completing children's quilts to send to the rescue shelter at Jeremiah's Hope Rescue Shelter. We are hoping for at least 6-10 people.  More are welcome, but please RSVP on Facebook so Kelly has a headcount.

***Eileen has scheduled a sew in at Memories by the Yard on Saturday, January 19, 13 from 10a-3p.  We ask that you bring $5 and a snack to share.  Bring any projects you would like to work on, and please remember to RSVP on Facebook, so Eileen will have a headcount.

****Swoon Bee will resume at my house on Sunday, January 20, 13 from 12-4p.  I haven't touched my blocks since we met in October, so I hope you all haven't finished.

Happy New Year and especially happy sewing!
