A New Bag Lady

Hi, I'm Cathy Kropp and I'm new to the guild.  You wouldn't guess it from my age but I've only been quilting less than10 years.  I really wanted to expand my horizons and learn more, which is why I joined this guild and boy am I glad I did.  I joined the guild on a Thursday, went with a group from the guild on retreat that Friday - Sunday, and then a little while later joined the Bag Bee.  I've done nothing but learn new things.  And with the upcoming workshops I plan to attend, I've still got a lot of learning to go.   Life is good!

I love the bag I made although it definitely has some imperfections.  It holds all my sewing supplies in one easy place and I can open it up and see where everything is.  Which came in handy last week when I was on another retreat.  But the best part of the Bag Bee is Joanna got me excited about making bags, in general. Now I can't wait for the Body Bag workshop.  And I even purchased a different kind of bag that requires a really long zipper.  I can't wait to try it out.  I had never installed a zipper before the bee and I must say it wasn't near as hard as I thought.  I'd never made anything in 3d before, only nice flat quilts and mostly wall hangings at that.  So this was a first in many ways.  But I did it. I love it.  And now I can't wait to make more bags -- all kinds of bags -- and I proudly consider myself a bag lady.  Enjoy!  Cathy.  Every day is a good day to quilt.

Here are some more bags made thanks to the Bag Bee:

SAMQG Babies

What happens when two friends are in a sewing guild and one of them is going to have a baby?  Well, I'm glad you asked.  She sets up a "sewing themed" baby shower.  (click the pic to see details)

Sara E organized a "Sew-In Shower" for Yong-Li.  Yong-Li is due this fall.

Check out the adorable onesies for her little son.

What a fun idea.  Very interactive, very functional and VERY ADORABLE!!

Thanks for bringing them to the SAMQG September meeting.

Epic Bernina Cake

SAMQG is not all sewing all the time.  We also have CAKE!!

Happy Birthday, Leslie!

This amazing, unreal, epic cake is the birthday cake for Leslie Tucker Jenison.  The cake was made by Akiko White and was a gift to Leslie from her friends/family.

Leslie, generously brought her birthday cake to our September SAMQG Meeting to share it with all the membership.  WOWSA.

All edible.
Even the lace around the "quilt".  The top cake was Lime Margarita and lower part of the cake was Carrot cake.

Leslie is also a Bernina Ambassador.

To say the membership was floored with the artwork and the generosity, would be an understatement.
WOWSA. again.

Thank you so much, Leslie!

SAMQG September Outreach

This is Sarah J. (pronounced Sarah H.)
She is the absolute backbone of the SAMQG Outreach coordination efforts.  She has her hand on the pulse of local charities, is connected to national charities and keeps Ovarian Cancer Research at MD Anderson very near her heart, and ours.

Thank you thank you thank you for all the work you do!

Wanna see all the quilt projects that members shared at the September 2014 meeting??

A couple of these projects even took a whirl over at the Kendall County Fair and won ribbons.  Go Girls!!

If you want to help, please leave a comment + email address and we'll get back to you with opportunities.

September 2014 Show'n'Tell

So many Show N Tell quilts from the September 2014 meeting, so little time.  Wait.  No.  We have all the time in the world.  This IS the internet.  =)

The SAMQG members really turned out a great "mini quilt show" for us, as they/we do every meeting.  Be sure to click around the blog.  We had amazing Outreach Quilts at the September 2014, those will be on a separate blog post.

Click any photo to see it larger, or come on out to a meeting to see the "mini quilt shows" in person.

September 2014 Block of the Month

Block of the Month is seriously the BOMB at SAMQG.

Kelli does an amazing job picking fast, easy, contemporary versions of so many different blocks.

At the beginning of each meeting Kelli set up a design wall with a preview for next month (the leaves) and a "turn in" side for the current month's block.

As the guests arrive, we get more and more and more and more blocks.  I think, for the past 3-4 months, the winner of the BOM has enough blocks for a full-on, real-deal quilt.

AH-Mazing!

Ya'll, that is aLOT of blocks and there are still 5-7 blocks that aren't pictured in the blue/green stripe.

I cannot wait to see how many blocks are coming for the very large, October Maple Leaf Block.

Directions for the block are in our "members only" FB page.

SAMQG Baby Quilts

In the past year, SAMQG has welcomed 4 babies.  Each sweet little baby happened to receive a sweet little quilt.  As it happened this year, a friend of each of the moms-to-be organized a "block drive", then the membership makes a small block based on the mom's color requests, a bff usually assembles it, and someone volunteers to quilt/finish it.  Totally voluntary, but a really unique gift to give to the littles.

I'll try to get more pictures of the two other baby quilts.

Here are a few of the SAMQG little littles' quilts.

Here's Sara E, presenting the baby quilt to its new owner:
